The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Jos
chapter, on Monday met to endorse the indefinite strike declared by its
national body over issues relating to a failed agreement reached with
the Federal Government.
The ASUU had instigated a strike action on Monday based, according to its national president, Isa Fagge, on the Federal Government’s failure to implement some of the issues contained in a 2009 agreement with the association. The union also accused the government of reneging on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it entered into with the union in December 2011.
The Jos university chapter of the association, at an emergency meeting held at its secretariat, reviewed the situation and aligned itself with the decision of its national body, pledging to cooperate fully to make the strike effective.
The chairman of the chapter, David Jankam, briefed members on the issues in contention and how the Federal Government had defaulted on various aspects of the agreement which, he said, left the union with no option than proceed on an indefinite strike.
He solicited the support of members for the strike which he said should be total and comprehensive.
The ASUU congress said that the strike was justified and resolved to comply with the union’s directive. It was agreed that periodic meetings should be held every Wednesday while the strike lasted to update members on any development.
